In the video, there are a lot of people watching but not helping because they’re apparently afraid to intervene because they’re afraid that the guy is an actual cop that could arrest them. If people had ran to the guy’s defense and pulled the mall cop guy off the deaf guy, could they themselves have gotten into legal trouble?

i don’t have any experience with the law field, will that affect me in getting this job? will i get fired if a thief gets away if i tried stopping him but couldn’t? also im A small girl will my coworkers pick on me or make me feel intimidated because im a girl doing a usual mans job and im short (5′1") haha but pretty strong, should i even consider a loss prevention agent job? because i heard its dangerous i dont know if thats true. will i get stabbed or shot at? i know bad situations like that happen, im somewhat afraid but the job seems fun.

so i would really appreciate good help you could give me. sorry if i seemed to ask a lot of questions i would just like to learn more about the loss prevention field.

It’s better to apply for a position with a larger outfit that contracts with corporate stores. Like Securias. Check your phone book for security service and send out resumes. They use a mixture of uniformed officers and plain clothed people. For the latter, a variety of looks is needed. They’ll give you handcuffs and a badge, if local laws allow you may also get pepper spray and/or a taser. It just depends.

Because it’s not an asset to look like security, your look may be an asset. I have a great friend who landed a plain clothed job with no experience. He’s 6" and barely 130lbs. He does shockingly well.

An average store will see about 5 shoplifters a day. A good average caught is 1 a day between a team. If they run, or in any case, you call the police. It’s not great if they get away, but it’s not earth shattering. You aren’t expected to risk your life for what may be less than $5.

The education needed in usually non-existent. The pay isn’t great. It isn’t a bad career to have, the pay and the jobs get better. You won’t get rich though!

The worst part of the job for my friend is the downtime. He spends 8 hours EVERYDAY, mostly in the evening, in a grocery store. To catch maybe 1 person. Nordstrom’s also uses plain clothed security as part of their deal, but all they do is report to a big guy with a gun who’s attached to the store itself. Trying on shoes in clothes you like all day and never being at risk isn’t the worst way to spend your life. But like I said, you have to work your way up to a sweet job like that.

EDIT: I forgot to say that my friend does actually enjoy the chase and tackle. He has fantastic work stories and is always disappointed if he didn’t catch anyone. He’s also always looking for criminals now. The other day at dinner, someone tried a dine-and-dash, the waitress ran after the couple. He jumped out of the booth and chased them down, caught the guy and handcuffed him! It was pretty great.
